Starliner: Boeing's Versatile Spacecraft
Compatibility with Launch Vehicles
Starliner, Boeing's Crew Space Transportation (CST-100) spacecraft, is designed to be flexible and compatible with various launch vehicles. These include:
- Atlas V
- Delta IV
- Falcon 9
- Vulcan
This versatility allows Starliner to adapt to different mission requirements and provides redundancy in launch options.
Collaboration with NASA
Starliner is being developed in collaboration with NASA's Commercial Crew Program. Under this partnership, Boeing is responsible for the spacecraft's design, development, and flight operations. NASA provides oversight and certification to ensure the spacecraft meets safety and performance standards.
Launch Campaign Timeline
Starliner's launch campaign begins 45 days before liftoff. During this period, United Launch Alliance (ULA) stacks an Atlas V rocket at Space Launch Complex 41. The spacecraft is then integrated with the rocket and undergoes various tests to ensure its readiness for flight.
Historic Mission
On May 6, 2025, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are scheduled to lift off on Starliner's first crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This flight will mark a milestone in human spaceflight, as it will be the first time astronauts have flown on Boeing's spacecraft.
Approach to ISS
After launch, Starliner will take approximately 24 hours to rendezvous with the ISS. The spacecraft will use its autonomous navigation systems to approach the orbiting lab and dock safely to one of its docking ports.
